Abstract

In the study of ancient music instruments, percussion have often been left sides. Too small for the musicologist, difficult to grasp for the historian, there is no comprehensive work on the subject. This paper proposes, through the example of Isis sistrum used in the Greco-Roman world, some methodological reflections in the approach of different historical sources available (archaeological, iconographic and literary) about this idiophone. Only a multidisciplinary approach can help to bring the best of what could be the sound of a musical instrument and its contexts of occurrence. [http://pallas.revues.org/2753]
