Abstract

Mercator has fewer lyrics than most Plautine plays, but it nevertheless demonstrates Plautus’ mastery of musical form. The lyrics of the play’s second
canticum reflect elegantly the emotions of their singer. The iambo-trochaic polymetrics of the first canticum are arranged with similar effectiveness, and the play’s overall musical structure contributes significantly to the messages it sends. [Timothy J. Moore]
