In Greek vase-painting of the Late Archaic and the Classical period the soloists who take part in the state musical contests are usually depicted standing on a bema. This appears to be a portable wooden platform which served perhaps also as a resonating box. Still several examples can be adduced which show that the absence of the bema on an image does not rule out a public performance, nor does its presence exclude a private event. [Nina Almazova]
