Abstract

This new edition of all the literary fragments by the Greek music theorist, biographer and philosopher Aristoxenus of Tarentum (4th century B.C.) fills an important gap in scholarship. More than a third of the 436 texts in works dating from antiquity to the renaissance are new discoveries and augment all previous textual editions. The new arrangement of the fragments and testimonies has been made on a chronological and systematic basis according to where they were discovered in the literature. The wealth of previously unnoticed extracts from Aristoxenus, the introduction, and the translation of all Greek passages - many for the first time into German - form a not insubstantial contribution to the study of the influence of ancient philosophical and scholarly traditions.
