As of 12/31/2011, the Society has no outstanding debts or financial liabilities.

c) report of the Committee on Electronic Communications (by Alan C. Bowen and David Creese).

-DC updates about the Status of 2011 subscription/mailing list.

MOISA maintains two e-mail discussion lists: one for the Executive, and a General List for the society's members. Currently (i.e. as of the date of the meeting) there are 117 subscribed addresses on the MOISA General List. This is greater than the number of members in good standing, because members whose subscriptions lapse are not immediately unsubscribed from the mailing list.

65 messages were sent via the General List in 2011.

-DC gives the report from the Subcommittee on Electronic Communications.

2011 saw further developments of the MOISA website, including improvements to the Bibliography module (which houses the 'De Musicis'). These are described in the Bibliographer's report. Some problems that were beyond the capabilities of our webmaster, Geoff Piersol, were resolved for us by Travis McCauley. Mr McCauley's services are considerably more expensive than Mr Piersol's, and the outgoing Executive accordingly limited its requests of him to priority items (the Bibliography and Membership modules).

Ongoing technical issues: some customizations carried out by our webmaster at the direction of the Executive brought along some unwanted side effects. One of these made it difficult for us to update subscriptions from members who renewed their membership with a bank payment (as opposed to the automated route via PayPal on the website, which continued to work properly). Another technical issue involves the display and formatting of the Italian section of the site. A third problem has limited the visibility of the Annual Meetings pages. The outgoing Subcommittee has been working on fixing these issues and will assist the incoming Subcommittee in completing the work.

Recommendations for future development: before he left the Subcommittee, Alan Bowen advised (i) switching to a more powerful search engine, (ii) upgrading the site software to a newer version of Drupal, and (iii) moving the site from its present home (@hotdrupal.com) to the servers of the University of Toronto Libraries, when (as anticipated) they begin to support Drupal. The outgoing Executive have prioritized the much-needed fixes to the Bibliography and Membership modules before taking care of the three latter items, while noting that (i) would improve Bibliography search functions, (ii) may provide greater flexibility and customizability in the site design and function, and (iii) could permit the society a small financial saving (about US$5/month), once the move is completed (which would itself involve costs).

3. Next Annual meeting of MOISA

a) Angela Bellia proposed to have the sixth Annual Meeting of MOISA held at Agrigento, in April-May 2013; she suggested as a theme for the meeting “The Greeks of the West.” The topic, which has never been the main topic of a MOISA annual meeting, was felt to be large and flexible enough to include discussion by scholars interested in different fields (organology, archaeology, philology, iconography).

AB thanked Angela Bellia for the invitation and members accepted the proposal. Angela Bellia will provide more details about the organization in the coming months.

b) other proposals of places for annual meetings in the future

Sylvain Perrot, proposed to have one of the next Moisa Meetings held at the Ecole Française d’Athène, which he represents (in collaboration with the University of Athens, represented by Prof. Psaroudakis).

David Creese proposed to have the VII Meeting (2014) in Newcastle (Great Britain), at Newcastle University.

Liana Lomento proposed to have the VIII Meeting (2015) in Urbino (Italy), in collaboration with the University of Urbino.

4. Publications

a) Daniela Castaldo announced the forthcoming publication of the Proceedings of the IV Annual Meeting of MOISA, 2010 by Congedo Publisher (Galatina-Lecce). The book, entitled Poesia, musica e agoni nella Grecia antica, is edited by D. Castaldo, F. Giannachi, and A. Manieri and is due to appear in March 2012.

b) Motion to establish MOISA Journal

The Executive Committee proposed the motion to establish the official Journal of the Association (provisionally entitled Greek and Roman Musical Studies: the MOISA Journal): this project had already been notified to the members. This proposal has been sent to the publishing company Brill, from which we have receiveda very positive response. The Executive Committee has already a draft of agreement whose details have yet to be discussed.

The Journal will be published once a year, starting in early 2013, and will be available online and in print. For the first three years there will also be the possibility of giving individual customers free access if they register (they would get a username and password). Each volume is expected to contain a total of not more than 8 to 10 articles and a small number of reviews (2-3) of the most relevant recent publications in the field: this section of the Journal will be coordinated by the Bibliographer of MOISA. The articles will be peer-reviewed. English will be the preferred language for articles, with occasional articles in other languages (French, Italian, Spanish, German). A procedure called ‘fast-track’ publication, which has the advantage of publishing articles as they become available, is also expected. The complete volume will be published at the end of each year.

Members welcomed the motion enthusiastically and approved it.

Egert Pöhlmann expressed his favorable opinion, noting the convenience, for scholars, of having papers on music in the ancient world collected in a single journal.

AB commented that Moisa members will not be favored in the selection of papers. Papers by non-members will be accepted, but the Editorial Board of the Journal must be formed only by members.

Konstantinos Melidis remarked that it would be better to accept papers in every language and not only in English.

AB answered that usually the Publisher prefers publications in English in order to ensure them a better diffusion.

DR proposed that papers be written in English and that the abstract be in the author’s preferred language.

Zdravko Blazekovic remarked that it would be better if the royalties from the content of the journal go not to the Publisher, but go to Moisa.

DR noted that because Moisa is a non-profit association, it cannot receive royalties.

AB added that the Publisher holds the royalties from the papers published.

Nina Almazova asked why the word ‘Moisa’ is to be included in the journal’s title.

AB remarked that the title allows people to see immediately that the journal’s main topic is the music of the ancient world. Details about the title can still be discussed and the Final decision on this matter should be made by the new Executive Committee.

Egert Pöhlmann noted that there is another journal whose acronym is GRBS.

Tosca Lynch suggested that the word ‘Moisa’ should be in the first part of the journal title, for example “Moisa. The Journal of Greek and Roman Music”.

AB proposed the following composition of the Editorial Board:

Editorial Board

Andrew Barker (editor-in-chief)

David Creese (Newcastle University, United Kingdom)

Donatella Restani (Università di Bologna, Italy)

Eleonora Rocconi (Università di Pavia, Italy)

Egert Pöhlmann (Institut für Alte Sprachen Uni Erlangen, Germany)

Timothy Moore (University of Texas at Austin, U.S.A.)

Associate Editors;

Massimo Raffa (Università della Calabria, Italy)

Linda Woodward (Academic copy-editor, Cambridge University Press)

Reviews editor:

Maggi Creese (Bibliographer of MOISA)

AB pointed out that the Editorial board of the journal and the Executive Committee must be separated: the first one has to negotiate between the Publisher and the Moisa society.

The proposal was approved unanimously.

c) bibliography project De musicis.

The bibliography currently covers titles until part of 2011. There are still some problems in the “search by author” function, but solutions are being looked into. Members are invited to give information about new publications to be entered in the bibliography.

5. Vote to adopt a possible amendment to art. 14 of MOISA’s Bylaws:

It is moved by Eleonora Rocconi and seconded by Andrew Barker, David Creese and Donatella Restani THAT, in the event that an official Journal of the Society is established, the following by-laws will apply:

(a)    the Editor of the Journal, in consultation with the Editorial Board, has responsibility for seeking contributions to the Journal, for all decisions about the contents of each issue, for any changes to the periodicity of the publication and for ensuring that the editorial work is conducted in an efficient and timely way;

(b)    the Executive of the Society is responsible for all negotiations and decisions affecting the relation between the Society and the Publisher. Any Executive proposal for radical changes in arrangements with the Publisher, however (including any proposal to terminate the contract with the Publisher), cannot be put into effect without the consent of the Society's members, in a vote which would normally take place at the Annual Meeting, but if necessary may be conducted through electronic communications at other times;

(c)    the Editor will be appointed by the Executive; other members of the Editorial Board will be selected by the Editor, subject to the approval of the Executive. The appointments of the Editor and the Editorial Board will last 4 years; members who hold these positions, however, can be re-appointedfor subsequent four-year terms;

(d)    the Editor of the Journal is ex officio also a member of the Executive, but with the right to vote on decisions only on matters affecting the Journal. If voting by the Executive on matters to do with the Journal is evenly divided, the President of the Society has the casting vote.

The amendment was approved with 63 votes in its favour (33 by the attendants and 30 received by email by the secretary ER in the last weeks), 0 against and 0 abstained. The quorum expected by the MOISA’s Bylaws is reached.

6. Elections of the new Executive Committee

The Executive Committee has to be renewed, as it term has expired. A new Executive Committee will include 6 people plus AB as honorary President.

Members warmly thank the outgoing Executive Committee for their activity and support to the Society.

There are candidatures from the following members:

Angelo Meriani,

Daniela Castaldo,

Pauline LeVen,

Stefan Hagel,

John Franklin,

Joan Silva Barris.

These candidates were elected with 59 votes in favor (29 by the attendants and 30received by email to the secretary ER in the past weeks), 0 against and 4 abstained. The quorum expected by the MOISA’s Bylaws is reached.

The new Executive Committee takes office
